1.0 Introduction to Physics

The Introduction to Physics chapter is designed to transition students from general science (what you learned in primary school) to the specifics of physical study. It helps you understand what Physics really is, why it matters in everyday life, and how it connects to other subjects and future careers.

For a complete beginner: Physics is not just about complicated formulas. It explains why things happen around you — why a ball falls down, why your phone charges, why rain falls, and how planes fly. This chapter builds your foundation so everything else in Physics (and science) makes sense!

1.1 Physics as a Science

Science is divided into three main branches:

  • Physics – study of matter and energy
  • Chemistry – study of substances and how they change
  • Biology – study of living things

Scientists are trained people who use scientific knowledge to solve problems. We need them as engineers, doctors, researchers, technicians, and more. Science gives us powerful tools and ideas that improve our daily lives — from electricity in our homes to medicines in hospitals.

1.2 Definition of Physics

Physics comes from the Greek word “physis” which means nature. It deals with natural phenomena.
