The "Big Three" Pathways: Where Does Your Child Fit?

In Senior School, your child is no longer a "generalist." They must pick one of three specialized pathways. Think of this as "Pre-University."

🔬

STEM

The Scientists & Builders
Pure Sciences · Applied Sciences · Technical & Engineering · ICT & Computing
🌍

Social Sciences

The Thinkers & Leaders
Humanities · Business Studies · Languages & Literature
🎨

Arts & Sports

The Creatives & Athletes
Fine Arts · Performing Arts (Music/Dance) · Sports Science

The "Golden Rule" of Electives

Regardless of the pathway, every Grade 10 student takes these 5 Compulsory Subjects:

English / KSL Kiswahili / KSL Mathematics CSL ★ Graded! Physical Education

Then they pick 3 Electives from their track. A STEM student might pick Physics, Chemistry and Geography — an Arts student might pick Music, Theatre and Graphic Design.

The "Hidden" Pathways Within STEM (Most Parents Miss This)

STEM isn't just "Physics, Chemistry, Biology" anymore. Here are the actual sub-tracks available — and schools rarely explain them during selection.

STEM Track Key Subjects Career End Goal
Pure Sciences Physics, Chemistry, Biology Doctor · Pharmacist · Researcher
Applied Sciences Agriculture, Food Technology, Home Science Agronomist · Food Scientist · Nutritionist
Technical & Engineering Woodwork, Metalwork, Drawing & Design Engineer · Architect · Technician
ICT & Computing Computer Science, Networking, Robotics Developer · Data Analyst · Cybersecurity
Shocking stat: 43% of parents don't know these sub-tracks exist (Edvibe survey, Dec 2025). Schools rarely explain them during selection.

You Grew Up on 8-4-4. Here's What's Different.

If you're a parent who went through 8-4-4, forget everything you know about exams. Here's the truth:

In 8-4-4...In CBC... One exam determined your futureProjects + exams + portfolio = final grade You memorized textbooksYour child applies knowledge to real problems Teachers taught, you listenedStudents research, explore, and present Form 1-4, then universityPathway selection at Grade 10 (career track) "Failing" meant repeating"Below Expectations" means targeted support
Your biggest mindset shift: Stop asking "What grade did you get?" Start asking "What did you learn to DO?"

The Placement Math: How They Got In

Parents are often confused by the "20-20-60" formula. Here's how your child's Grade 10 placement was calculated:

20%
KPSEA (Grade 6 National Exam)
20%
School-Based Assessments (Grades 7, 8 & 9)
60%
KJSEA (Grade 9 National Exam) — biggest weight!
Pro Tip: If you aren't happy with the school placement, the Ministry of Education Transfer Window typically opens in the first two weeks of January. Check placement.education.go.ke

Preparing for KJSEA 2027-2028: Start Now

If your child is in Grade 8 or 9, you have a 12-24 month head start. Don't waste it.

62%

Your 3-Step Action Plan for Grade 8-9 Parents:
  1. Download Grade 7-9 assessment packs now — don't wait for school to assign homework
  2. Start CSL project ideation in Grade 8 (most schools wait until Grade 9 — too late)
  3. Build a digital portfolio today — use Google Drive or a simple folder on your phone

The "Secret" Subject: Community Service Learning (CSL)

In 2026, you can't just study your way through Senior School. CSL is compulsory and graded. Every Grade 10 student must complete a real community project — environmental conservation, elderly care, digital literacy, and more.

The Pain: It requires a portfolio of evidence (photos, journals, and supervisor signatures).

Real CSL Projects That Worked (2025 Examples)

Project Idea Time Cost KNEC Score
Digital Literacy for Elders (teaching M-Pesa)2 weekends0 KESExceeds

What Teachers Wish Parents Knew

Anonymous survey, N=327 JSS Teachers — "What would you tell Grade 10 parents if you could be completely honest?"

1
"Please don't do your child's project. We can tell."
→ Your action: Supervise, don't replace.
2
"The rubric matters more than the project quality."
→ Your action: Read the rubric WITH your child before starting.
3
"We have 45 students and 1 laptop. Help us."
→ Your action: Donate old laptops. Schools accept them.
4
"Your child's attitude matters more than their intelligence."
→ Your action: Praise effort, not results.
5
"We're not trained on all 12 subjects either. We're learning too."
→ Your action: Be patient. We're all in this together.
