The "Big Three" Pathways: Where Does Your Child Fit?

In Senior School, your child is no longer a "generalist." They must pick one of three specialized pathways. Think of this as "Pre-University."

The "Golden Rule" of Electives

Regardless of the pathway, every Grade 10 student takes these 5 Compulsory Subjects:

English / KSL Kiswahili / KSL Mathematics CSL ★ Graded! Physical Education

Then they pick 3 Electives from their track. A STEM student might pick Physics, Chemistry and Geography — an Arts student might pick Music, Theatre and Graphic Design.

The "Hidden" Pathways Within STEM (Most Parents Miss This)

STEM isn't just "Physics, Chemistry, Biology" anymore. Here are the actual sub-tracks available — and schools rarely explain them during selection.

STEM Track Key Subjects Career End Goal
Pure SciencesPhysics, Chemistry, BiologyDoctor · Pharmacist · Researcher
Applied SciencesAgriculture, Food Technology, Home ScienceAgronomist · Food Scientist · Nutritionist
Technical & EngineeringWoodwork, Metalwork, Drawing & DesignEngineer · Architect · Technician
ICT & ComputingComputer Science, Networking, RoboticsDeveloper · Data Analyst · Cybersecurity
Shocking stat: 43% of parents don't know these sub-tracks exist (Edvibe survey, Dec 2025). Schools rarely explain them during selection.
✅ May 2026 Policy Update
🏫 The Comprehensive School Framework is Now Official: Junior Secondary is no longer a standalone guest on primary school compounds. Following the National Education Conference in Naivasha, the Ministry of Education has legally consolidated JSS and primary under a single Board of Management (BoM) and a single Head of Institution (HoI). For parents, this means dealing with school management just got simpler — one office, one chain of command, one budget conversation.

You Grew Up on 8-4-4. Here's What's Different.

If you're a parent who went through 8-4-4, forget everything you know about exams. Here's the truth:

In 8-4-4…In CBC…
One exam determined your futureProjects + exams + portfolio = final grade
You memorized textbooksYour child applies knowledge to real problems
Teachers taught, you listenedStudents research, explore, and present

"Failing" meant repeating"Below Expectations" means targeted support
Your biggest mindset shift: Stop asking "What grade did you get?" Start asking "What did you learn to DO?"

The Placement Math: How They Got In

Parents are often confused by the "20-20-60" formula. Here's how your child's Grade 10 placement was calculated:

20%
KPSEA (Grade 6 National Exam)
20%
School-Based Assessments (Grades 7, 8 & 9)
60%
KJSEA (Grade 9 National Exam) — biggest weight!
Pro Tip: If you aren't happy with the school placement, the Ministry of Education Transfer Window typically opens in the first two weeks of January. Check placement.education.go.ke

Preparing for KJSEA 2027–2028: Start Now

If your child is in Grade 8 or 9, you have a 12–24 month head start. Don't waste it.

Project Submission Rush — May to July 2026

If your child hasn't started documenting their CSL project yet, this week is the deadline to start. Schools are currently collecting supervisor signatures and portfolio evidence. A late or incomplete submission scores "Below Expectations" automatically.

In 2026, you can't just study your way through Senior School. CSL is compulsory and graded. Every Grade 10 student must complete a real community project — environmental conservation, elderly care, digital literacy, and more.

The Pain: It requires a portfolio of evidence (photos, journals, and supervisor signatures).

⚠️ Textbook Backlog Alert — May 2026

Your school may be missing printed textbooks for Grade 10 specialized electives right now. A structural 11.4 billion KES printing backlog has delayed distribution of curriculum materials, particularly for Applied Sciences and ICT & Computing tracks, due to historical state debts to local printers.

What to do: Ask your child's class teacher which specific elective titles are missing. Use Edvibe's digital guides and the "CBC on a Budget" PDF as a stopgap — KNEC assessments do not require a specific textbook edition, so digital alternatives are fully accepted.

What You'll Actually Pay in 2026

ExpenseRange (KES)DIY-able?
Senior School registration fee1,000 – 3,000No — mandatory
Textbooks (9–12 subjects)8,000 – 15,000Partially — see backlog note above
Projects per term (3–5 projects)1,500 – 5,000Yes — use Edvibe guides
Uniform (new for Senior School)3,000 – 7,000No
Printing portfolio evidence300 – 800Yes — digital accepted
TOTAL FIRST TERM14,300 – 32,800
How to cut costs by 40%: Buy second-hand textbooks from "Textbook Rescue Centre" Facebook group · Use Edvibe Kitchen Science guides instead of buying lab chemicals · Submit digital portfolios — schools CANNOT require printed ones (KNEC circular, Nov 2025) · If your child's elective textbook is in the backlog, use Edvibe's digital PDF as the full substitute.
🧑‍👧 For Single Parents & Guardians: You don't have 10 hours a week for projects. Here's your shortcut:
  • Use WhatsApp voice notes — record rubric explanations while cooking (send to child)
  • Partner with another family — split project costs and supervision duties
  • Apply for bursary NOW — deadline March 31. Don't assume you won't qualify.
  • Skip printing entirely — KNEC allows digital portfolios. Use your phone camera.

What Teachers Wish Parents Knew

Anonymous survey, N=327 JSS Teachers — "What would you tell Grade 10 parents if you could be completely honest?"

1
"Please don't do your child's project. We can tell."
→ Your action: Supervise, don't replace.
2
"The rubric matters more than the project quality."
→ Your action: Read the rubric WITH your child before starting.
3
"We have 45 students and 1 laptop. Help us."
→ Your action: Donate old laptops. Schools accept them.
4
"Your child's attitude matters more than their intelligence."
→ Your action: Praise effort, not results.
5
"We're not trained on all 12 subjects either. We're learning too."
→ Your action: Be patient. We're all in this together.
📋 For School Leaders & Principals — TSC Update: The Teachers Service Commission has committed to regularising 20,000 intern teachers into permanent employment and unlocking funds for 30,000 teacher promotions. If your school is still running on a thin intern cohort, this pipeline is moving. Factor this into your staffing plans for Term 3 and beyond.

Senior School is Pre-University — Here's What That Means for Costs

🎓

New University Funding Model: Bands 1 to 5

The pathway your child chooses in Grade 10 will directly affect how they're funded at university. Kenya's new Higher Education funding model uses five bands — from Differentiated Unit Cost (DUC) scholarships to income-assessed loans — determined algorithmically based on cluster points and means-testing. A student who picks the wrong pathway in Grade 10 may find themselves unable to access the funding band for their preferred university programme. The earlier you map your child's Grade 10 electives to their intended tertiary pathway, the better position they're in when the funding algorithm runs. Keep following Edvibe for a dedicated university funding guide as your child progresses.

The "I Only Have 60 Seconds" Summary

What is Grade 10?
First year of CBC Senior School. Your child picks a career path now — STEM, Social Sciences, or Arts/Sports.
What changed in May 2026?
JSS is now officially under one BoM and one HoI (Comprehensive School). Textbook backlog is real — go digital. TSC intern absorption is moving.
What's urgent right now?
Term 2 CSL project submissions close between June and July. If your child hasn't started their portfolio, start this week.
How do I save money?
Digital portfolios are free. Buy second-hand books. Use Edvibe's Kitchen Science guides. Download "CBC on a Budget" PDF.
Is my child going to fail?
No. But they will struggle if YOU don't understand the rubric system. Read it now.
CBC in 2026 isn't a "trial" anymore — it's the system. The winners won't be the ones who memorize the most; they'll be the ones who manage their Portfolios and CSL projects effectively.
