1.0 INTRODUCTION TO CHEMISTRY
Chemistry is the central science that connects the physical world with the living world. This chapter lays the foundation: what chemistry is, what the world is made of (matter), how substances combine (mixtures), materials that conduct electricity, the impact of drugs, the tools we use (apparatus), and how to stay safe while exploring. Master these ideas – they are the starting point for everything that follows.
1.1 WHAT IS CHEMISTRY?
Chemistry is the scientific study of matter—its composition, structure, properties, and the changes it undergoes. It explains how atoms and molecules interact to form everything around us, from the air we breathe to the medicines that heal us.
1.1.1 Branches of Chemistry
Chemistry is a vast field, and it is divided into several specialized branches. Understanding them helps you see the different lenses through which chemists view the world.
- Physical Chemistry: Studies the physical principles behind chemical interactions. It deals with energy, rates of reaction (kinetics), and how substances behave under different conditions (pressure, temperature). Think: why does a reaction go faster when heated?
- Organic Chemistry: The study of carbon-containing compounds. Carbon is unique because it forms long chains and rings, making millions of compounds possible—from fuels and plastics to DNA and medicines.
- Inorganic Chemistry: Focuses
