1. Why This Matters
In the late 19th century, scientists noticed something strange. When they passed electricity through a glass tube with most of the air removed, the glass at one end glowed with a mysterious green light. Something was travelling from the negative electrode (cathode) to the positive electrode (anode). They called it "cathode rays." No one knew what they were.
